HAWTHORN General Manager – Football Operations, Chris Fagan has labelled the possibility of Paul Chapman joining the Hawks as ‘ironic’.

The three-time Geelong premiership player is available after the Cats decided not to offer him a new contract for 2014.

With the Hawks and Cats having a much publicised history since the 2008 Grand Final, Fagan said it would be ironic if Chapman, who has been present for each of the 12 games since the 2008 decider were to join the Hawks.

“It would be ironic if he ended up in a Hawthorn jumper after the history of Geelong and Hawthorn, it would be quite amusing,” Fagan told SEN.

Fagan admits he thinks the 251 game veteran still has more to offer at AFL level but with the talent already in the Hawthorn forward line, he might not be a good fit.

Hawthorn already has premiership player Cyril Rioli, Luke Breust and Paul Puopolo playing the small forward role, with the trio all able too, to spend time in the midfield.

“That’s one of those interesting ones you have to look at and see how many spots we’ve actually got on our list because we want to have probably three picks in the draft,” Fagan said.

“He is obviously a quality player but you look at our team, we’ve got Rioli and Breust and Puopolo and a few other guys who can play that small forward role."

At 31 year of age too, Fagan said his age would be a factor in the Club’s decision.

“I’m sure he could add to our team but whether we want to make our team a little bit older or go a little bit younger, that’s a decision we have to make,” he said.
