It was a close game for the VFLW Hawks against the Bombers on Saturday, with the girls going down by 14 points.

There were lots of fresh faces in the side, with new recruits joining from the AFLW and the NAB League. This brought a renewed energy, with the girls seeing a much better result than when they matched up against the Bombers back in Round 3.

Despite the loss, Coach Bec Goddard is feeling optimistic about her team, and is looking ahead to the rounds to come.

Here’s her picks for the best on ground against the Dons.

The results? Not quite. The promise? There for all to see. A look at some of the 'elite' numbers our youngsters are putting up.

Eloise Chaston

“She was unbelievable. El just attacked the footy. Her one-percenters around the ground, her blocking was fantastic. There were times when she had three players on her and she still managed to put the ball forward for us, or to leap at the footy, and just make a real impact on the game. She’s a really exciting young player, and I’ve got no doubt that she’s going to play AFLW.”

Tamara Luke

“Tam has so much experience and leadership, and she just had so much presence up forward today. It really made the Essendon defenders work to stop her, and because of that it made our other forwards more available to get the footy.”

Jessie Williams

“Jessie looked dangerous all day, and they put one of their best defenders on Jessie to make sure she wasn’t going to take Tamara Luke’s crumbs. She really worked both ways and hopefully gets her hands on the footy and kicks a few more goals in the next few weeks.”

Dominique Carbone

“Dom was really great – she started on the bench today and made a real impact the second that she came onto the ground. She made some really good kicking choices today and I was really impressed with her consistency.”
