Box Hill took home a very convincing win against Essendon on Sunday following an impressive 23-goal haul.

Hear what Hawthorn Development Coach Andy Otten had to say about the 11 senior-listed Hawks who featured in the 94-point win.

Daniel Howe (30 disposals, 7 tackles, 10 clearances, 4 marks, 1 goal)

“Howey was a clear stand-out on the field, finishing with 30 possessions and 10 clearances. He started the game with an intensity in which everyone else followed suit. He had some great inside 50 kicks and his ball use was at a high level.”

Liam Shiels (30 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 5 marks)

“Shiels slotted back into the side, and his leadership was outstanding again. He really buys in and takes the young guys under his wing when he plays. He was again a great performer for the day with 29 possessions. He had a really strong stand-out performance with his ball use as well. But again, his leadership and maturity is really beneficial for our younger players.”

Josh Morris (22 disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles)

“Tank had the job this weekend on Tippa from Essendon, who is a really strong player for them. He did a great job keeping him very quiet and no influence on the game. But most pleasingly Josh was able to find his fair share of the ball as well. He had 22 touches, which is a great effort whilst doing a defensive shutdown role. He used the ball well and looked really solid down in defence. He’s in great form for us at the moment, a really reliable defender.”

Ned Long (15 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal)

“For his high standards, Longy had a quiet first half. We tried to play him down forward, and as our second ruckman this week, but he was a but quiet down there. So in the second half we decided to get him involved in the game, and brought him up as a midfielder and he started getting his hands on the footy – he had eight disposals in the third quarter to kick start his game. In that second half he showed really promising signs playing as a midfielder.”

Sam Butler (3 goals, 15 disposals)

“Buts had a great game for us – his energy and intensity around the footy is very exciting. I think I’ve said it before, but every time he’s near the footy, something good seems to happen. He's got explosive pace, he attacks the footy hard and got some scoreboard reward this week with three goals. He’s pushing closer and closer to an AFL selection.”

Jack Saunders (16 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal)

“Saundo continues to develop nicely on his progression playing as a high half forward and getting some wing minutes as well. He’s developing nicely for us and taking steps in the right direction. He used his left foot twice this week, which was really pleasing to see, we’ve been working on that pretty diligently for the past year really. So great to see that reward for effort.”

Kyle Hartigan (14 disposals, 8 marks)

“Again, his leadership down back was at an all-time level. He has bounced back really well. He looks really athletic behind the ball, reading the play sharply and making some really good decisions. We even threw him forward in the last quarter and he had a couple shots on goal. Usually kicks them, but he looked really dangerous for us as a forward in that last quarter.”

Seamus Mitchell (15 disposals, 3 clearances)

“It was Seamus’ third game as a defender for us, he showed some brilliant flashes – running through the ground, carrying and bouncing the footy. We’re really encouraging him and Saunders to take the game on with their leg speed. We want to see them run, carry and take a bounce. So when he does that he looks like a really, really good player for us.”

Connor Downie (10 disposals, 6 marks)

“It was great to have Connor back. He has had a bit of a stop-start year so far through injury, so getting him back in the team was great. He played half back on the wing, a little bit quiet early, but he was just adjusting and getting rid of some rust. He got into the game nicely in the second and third quarter, using his long left penetrating kick to set up some nice attacks for us."

Emerson Jeka (5 goals, 7 disposals, 3 marks)

“Jeka’s first half was outstanding. We’ve been wanting him to bring his intensity and effort consistently and in the first half he defiantly brought that. Crashing packs, creating contests, and pleasingly, he got some personal reward for that on the scoreboard. He kicked five goals in the first half and looked very dangerous up forward. Unfortunately, he hurt his hamstring so hopefully it’s not too bad."

Tyler Brockman

“Brocky had his first game for the year following quite some time on the sidelines. He came on the ground and laid this awesome tackle in the forward 50 in the opening term and got holding the ball, but unfortunately, he hurt his shoulder, so he’ll be missing some time as well. We’ll be getting around both Brocky and Jeka and show them love and support.”
