Hawthorn Captain Emily Bates will miss the remainder of the 2026 AFLW season after scans confirmed a ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

The 30-year-old suffered the injury in the third term of the Hawks Round 5 clash with the Western Bulldogs at the Kennedy Community Centre on Saturday.

Scans revealed a rupture of the ACL and damage to the meniscus, which will require surgery.

The playing group was informed of the news on Monday.

Hawthorn General Manager of AFLW Keegan Brooksby said the club will support Bates in her recovery.

“This is clearly disappointing news for Emily. The playing group and wider club will support her through the recovery journey,” Brooksby said.

“We have no doubt she’ll approach her rehab with the diligence and professionalism she’s always been known for.

“Although Emily won’t return to the field in 2026, she will continue to play an important off-field role in our program, as our Captain.”
