Hawthorn has welcomed premiership pair Casey Sherriff and Eliza West to the club after reaching a trade deal with Melbourne on day two of the 2023 AFLW Trade Period.

In exchange for Sherriff, West, along with Pick 16, the Hawks will send Picks 5 and 26 to Melbourne.

Originally recruited by Melbourne as a replacement player in 2018, Sherriff has never looked back, cementing her spot in the Demons’ line-up for 48 games.

The 25-year-old has demonstrated her impressive versatility through six seasons at Melbourne, joining initially as defender before more recently spending time in the forward line and on the wing.

West comes across to the Hawks after 36 games with Melbourne.

The 26-year-old is a damaging midfielder who averaged 17.2 disposals and 6.4 tackles per game in her most recent campaign.

Prior to being recruited by the Demons, West claimed Casey’s VFLW Best and Fairest, took home the Debbie Lee Rising Star Award and played college basketball for Utah State.

Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Mitchell Cashion was thrilled to have the premiership duo join the brown and gold.

“We’re excited to welcome Casey and Eliza to the Hawthorn family following successful stints at Melbourne,” Cashion said.

“In Casey, we’re getting a versatile player with a high footy IQ.

"While experiencing success in a number of positions with the Demons, coming to the Hawks gives her a great opportunity to excel in one position.

“Eliza is a strong inside midfielder who never gives up at the contest.

"She is a proven finals player and will provide additional physicality and pressure in our midfield.

“Not only will Casey and Eliza’s playing abilities enhance our young and developing squad, but so too will their knowledge of what it takes to win an AFLW flag.

“We look forward to seeing them hit the ground running in pre-season ahead of what is set to be an exciting 2024 for the brown and gold.”
