Hawthorn Captain Emily Bates is set to be available for selection in this Saturday night's Semi Final should she sucessfully get through main training later this week.
The 30-year-old has been sidelined since Round 7 after undergoing surgery on an injured SC joint.
Meanwhile, a timeline has been established for Lucy Wales, who continues to recover from appendix surgery.
High Performance Manager Aaron Kellett also detailed the status of three Hawks, Kaitlyn Ashmore (calf), Jasmine Fleming (groin) and Áine McDonagh who will all face tests to play this weekend, as well as Emily Everist, who has been entered into concussion protocols.
Kaitlyn Ashmore (Calf) - Test
“Kashy has been playing with some achilles soreness the past few weeks, that progressed down into some calf soreness during the match, we assessed her during the game and functionally, she wasn’t able to operate as well as we needed her to so wasn’t able to finish the game. We scanned on Monday and thankfully, that’s come back without any muscle injury present but she does have some calf overload signs. We’ll assess later in the week so she’s technically a test for this weekend.”
Jasmine Fleming (Groin) – Test
“She just battled some groin soreness during the game on Friday night, she’s pulled up pretty sore. We’ll manage that early in this part of the week hopefully with an aim to get her up this weekend, but she will be a test to see if she’s able to function and operate at the level we know she can before we make a decision.”
Áine McDonagh (Knee) – Test
“It was a knee on knee contact, we scanned that on Monday out of an abundance of caution and thankfully that’s come back with the knee structurally sound. She’s very sore, it was a significant contact so we’ll look to manage that through the early part of this week and at this stage she’ll be a test also for the weekend.”
Emily Bates (SC Joint) – Test
“Emily’s progressed remarkably well with her return to play post what is a serious sternoclavicular injury. The surgeon, as I said did a remarkable job stabilising that joint and Emily worked very hard to get all of her strength markers and all of her functional markers back online really successfully. We’ve been able to get her back to team training, we’ve also stepped her through her return to contact progressions and she’s trained fully today successfully. We’ve also had her reviewed by the surgeon given the nature of the injury and he’s cleared her to be available for this weekend, pending completion of main training on Thursday.”
Emily Everist (Concussion) – Protocols
“She had a bit of head knock during the game, she was taken for a head injury assessment and was cleared of concussion signs at the time. As the days post-game progressed there were some indications that maybe there was a little bit of uncertainty around how she recovered, and with the nature of the priorities of player health and wellbeing being paramount for us, that uncertainty means we’re going to enter her into concussion protols out of an abundance of caution, which means she will miss this weekend.”
Lucy Wales (Appendix) – 1-2 weeks
“Lucy’s also progressed remarkably well post abdomen surgery. She’s resumed to some modified training this week and has brought some of her gym and strength markers online. It’s a very tight timeline for this weekend, so given the fact that we’re not able to step her loading up to the level we would expect to be available for AFLW return, it’s a bit of a bridge too far this weekend. But we’re targeting a return, if we’re able to progress past this weekend, we’re aiming for availability in the preliminary final if we’re able to make it.”
