The Rundown

Hawthorn entered this Round 11 clash with Port Adelaide desperate for a win, after losing its previous three games. But it was the Power that started with all the run, booting five first quarter goals to the Hawks’ one. A quarter-time rev-up clearly had an effect, as the Hawks worked their way back into the game to be all-square at the main break. Alastair Clarkson’s side was able to maintain its defensive intent throughout the third term, allowing Port just one major, as the Hawks took a seven-point lead into the final change. The lead swung both ways in a tense final term, but the brown and gold were ultimately able to hold on in a scrappy but important win.

The Star

Shaun Burgoyne was the most influential player on the ground, with 26 disposals, a goal and a game-high eight clearances to his name.

Burgoyne’s major came at an important time for the Hawks, giving them a slight ascendancy just before three-quarter time.

The Moment

Two goals in as many minutes from Charlie Dixon and Robbie Gray gave the Power the lead back for the first time in over 40 minutes of play.

There was only seven minutes remaining and an upset win to Ken Hinkley’s side looked imminent.

But Jarryd Roughead had other ideas. The key forward won a free kick at the top of the goal square and calmly slotted through what would be the game-winner.

The Coach

"Just to get the win is really pleasing for us. We’ve had a pretty scratchy month, lost three games on the trot coming into this game and it was pretty important we won today just to keep us in touch with the eight.” - Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson
