Over the course of the next six weeks, Hawthorn will be putting fans in the coaches box and giving them a unique opportunity to choose their ultimate line-up of each decade since 1960.

Those who enter at least one team during the competition will go into the draw to win a 2019 team signed guernsey.

The next decade in the spotlight: the ‘80s.

Here’s a few highlights to jog your memory…

The most successful decade in Hawthorn history was the ‘80s, with the likes of Dermott Brereton, Gary Buckenara, Robert DiPierdomenico to name a few, carrying the team to four premierships throughout the ten years.

Despite Hawthorn greats Leigh Matthews and Peter Knights hanging up their boots in 1985, the club welcomed Jason Dunstall and John Platten to bolster the side to premierships in ’86, ’88 and ’89.

Becoming back-to-back premiers was a memorable way to finish the decade, with the ’89 grand final arguably the most brutal and physical final in AFL history.

With multiple injured players, the Hawks managed to defeat Geelong by six points on the big stage, securing the club’s eighth premiership cup.

Michael Tuck captained the side to three of its four premierships and Gary Ayres showed his strength down back being named Norm Smith Medallist in both ’86 and ’88 grand finals - the first player to achieve such a feat.
