Hawthorn has selected North Adelaide forward/utility Mattea Breed with Pick 4 in the AFLW Season Eight supplementary draft.

The Darwin Buffaloes product won the NTFL under 18 competition’s Best and Fairest awards in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons as well as the league’s Women’s Rising Star honour in 2018/19.

Following this promising junior career, Breed made the move to Adelaide and spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Norwood in the SANFLW, averaging 14.1 disposals from her 11 appearances in 2020 and 9.8 possessions from her five matches in 2021.

Switching to North Adelaide for the 2023 SANFLW season after spending a season at the local level, Breed has continued her upward trajectory.

The 174cm talent has averaged 14.3 disposals to go with six goals from her four games, displaying her impressive athleticism and goal sense.

The 21-year-old is also ranked second in average score involvements and sixth in total goals this season.

Hawthorn AFLW List Manager Mitchell Cashion said the future was bright for Breed.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Mattea to the Hawthorn family,” Cashion said.

“Mattea is a powerful player who has fantastic aerial ability and a strong kick.

“We’re looking forward to seeing her transfer those skills to AFLW and believe she will be a great fit for our team.”
