Hawthorn defender Changkuoth Jiath is on track to make his return to the field next month.

Jiath has spent the past six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during the club's intraclub match in February.

Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge said Round 6 would now be the target for his return.

"It's obviously been an extended time for this injury, but there are reasons for that given the location and type of injury," Burge explained.

"Sometimes we need to take longer because there may be some more tendon involvement, and others have less so they turn around quicker.

"This has been a longer rehab phase, but what we do know is that when he's back he should be quite safe to progress and build his season from there.

"He's running and building an amazing base at the moment, and we're getting closer to returning to football training over the next week or so, and then we can plan for that return."

Meanwhile, Cooper Stephens (achilles) and Jack O'Sullivan (foot) are both a test to play ahead of the weekend.

Burge said if Stephens completes training on Thursday and recovers well, he could potentially progress into some game play in Box Hill's VFL game on Saturday.

O'Sullivan has also made some positive progress over the last fortnight and similarly will need to tick off Thursday's main session before eyeing some match play on the weekend.
