Young midfielder Josh Ward has committed his future to Hawthorn, putting pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at the club until at least the end of 2029 when he becomes eligible for free agency.

The four-year extension comes amid a career-best year for the 21-year-old young gun, who is averaging almost 22 disposals per game this season, ranking him third among all Hawthorn players for total possessions in 2025.

Now in his fourth season at the top level, the former Rising Star nominee has continued to elevate himself to become a key contributor within the Hawks engine room, missing just one game this year.

Known for his elite endurance and gut-running, Ward has been Hawthorn’s second-best uncontested possession getter in 2025, in addition to his career-best clearance numbers (3.5 per game) and score involvements (4.9 per game).

Hawthorn National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie said Ward’s season to date has reflected the club’s strong showing of faith in the former top 10 pick.

“Wardy has blossomed into an important cog within our senior side following an impressive second half of last season, where he played in both our finals,” McKenzie said.

“Since being drafted as a talented youngster, Wardy has been among our hardest workers at the club, leaving no stone unturned in his desire to become a top-line midfielder.

“With his elite endurance and running capabilities, Wardy has demonstrated what his damaging-best can look like, and I’m sure the Hawthorn faithful are excited about what he can deliver for our club over the next few years.”
