Hawthorn has received an end of second-round draft selection (currently Pick #39) as compensation after James Worpel told the club he was departing as a restricted free agent to join Geelong.
The Hawks did not match Geelong’s offer, meaning the club farewelled the 26-year-old following 148 games in the brown and gold.
Worpel, a Geelong Falcons product, joined Hawthorn with Pick #45 in the 2017 National Draft.
After being judged Best First Year Player in his debut season, Worpel would go on to claim the club’s highest individual honour in 2019, becoming a Peter Crimmins Medallist at just 20 years of age.
National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie thanked Worpel for his service to Hawthorn.
“As is James’ right as a restricted free agent, he has chosen to seek a new opportunity at Geelong,” McKenzie said.
“Playing 148 games for the Hawks, James was always a popular teammate and respected figure at our club.
“On behalf of the club, I’d like to acknowledge James’ amazing contribution to Hawthorn, his professionalism and dedication never wavered during his eight seasons in the brown and gold, giving his all each week.
“We wish him well in his future endeavours."
