Hawthorn VFLW players travelled to Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully to attend a School Sports Victoria female football carnival last Friday.

Twenty-six schools from across the Knox and Dandenong regions were involved in the round-robin tournament, where teams played a number of 15-minute matches across the day.

During a team’s scheduled “bye” girls attended a clinic run by Hawthorn players including Rebecca Beeson, Olivia Flanagan, Ellie Macdonald, Phoebe McWilliams and Jayde Van Dyk.

They participated in tackling drills, were shown bumping techniques and took speccies on the VFLW players before a Q and A session at the conclusion of the clinic.

Hawthorn’s Women’s Academy and Community Coordinator Sarah Perkins said everyone involved enjoyed the experience.

“It was great to see so many young girls out there playing footy,” said Perkins.

“Hopefully now that they have met our VFLW girls they can see that there is a pathway for them to continue their football careers if they choose to.

“It’s amazing to see the growth of female football in Melbourne’s east and it was wonderful that the Hawthorn Football club could be involved.”

Boronia Heights Primary School were the winners of the Knox Division and Tecoma Primary School won the Dandenong Division.

Congratulations to all girls who played on the day.
