STAR midfielder Sam Mitchell was recognised for his outstanding season with a third-placed finish in the 2015 Peter Crimmins Medal.

Mitchell polled 192 votes, to finish behind only winner Josh Gibson (204) and runner-up Cyril Rioli (194).

The four-time Peter Crimmins Medal winner and four-time Hawthorn premiership player said it was nice to be recognised for his season.

He said it was an exceptional year from the team, who tasted the ultimate success for the third year in a row.

“It takes a lot of players to play really well on a consistent basis to get to this position where we can win premierships, I’m happy to just be a part of it to be honest,” Mitchell said.

“To get the fourth premiership medal, for myself, that was what it was all about.”

The 33-year-old averaged 31.2 disposals per game in 2015, a year in which he was named in the All Australian team and also finished third in the Brownlow Medal.

A fan favourite for this year’s Peter Crimmins Medal, Mitchell joked that the “fans love me more than the coaches do”.

But he was quick to praise teammates Gibson and Rioli – also All Australians – for their outstanding seasons.

He polled the most votes of any Hawk in Rounds 10, 19, 23 and the qualifying final, and the equal most votes in Rounds 5, 15 and the preliminary final.

Mitchell played 24 of a possible 26 matches, polling votes in every game.

He has finished in the top three of the Peter Crimmins Medal in all but two years since 2006.

After collecting 137 disposals across four matches during the finals, Mitchell was named the club’s Best Player in Finals.

He also won the Fans MVP Award, the Confreres Player of the Year award and the Hawks Cheersquad Player of the Year award.
