Fortunately this weekend’s game isn’t at Glenferrie Oval.

We can thank our lucky stars, we’re playing on a Sunday and not a Friday, Saturday or Monday.

Playing Brisbane and not the Bombers is also a great result.

But, why?

Well, in Hawthorn’s 95 Round 1 games, playing at Glenferrie Oval hasn’t been a good omen – the Hawks have won just six times from 25 attempts.

And, of the four days of the week the club has kicked off its season on over the past 95 years, Sunday is the only one it holds a winning record.

Finally, we’ve beaten the Lions in two of the three season openers we’ve met them in – a much more positive story than our record against Essendon (one win from nine Round 1 games), Geelong (three from 11) or Carlton (three from 10).

The first week of the season hasn’t been kind to Hawthorn historically with just 41 wins coming from 95 games at a winning rate of nearly 20 per cent lower than the club’s 61 per cent finals record.

But, pleasingly, form in the season opener doesn’t necessarily forecast the way a season will pan out.

Across Hawthorn’s 13 premiership seasons, the club’s record in Round 1 sits at a largely unflattering eight wins and five losses.

So, what’s the lesson out of all this?

Well, we’re not too sure!
