1.5 to 5.1 sums up Hawks year.
Lacking some finish.
Plenty of good signs though.#AFLHawksLions #InClarkoWeTrust

The Rundown

Hawthorn and Brisbane met for the second time in 2019 at Hawthorn’s Tasmanian home, Launceston. The Lions were searching for their sixth successive win of the season and the Hawks were hoping to improve their already slim finals hopes. It was a close game in the opening quarter with Hawthorn leading by just three points at the first break. Brisbane overtook the Hawks in the second term and pushed in front on the scoreboard, a lead that they sustained for the remainder of the match. Inaccuracy in front of goals in the third quarter was the nail in the coffin for the home side as they kicked one goal five to Brisbane’s five goals one. The Lions kept strong in the final term and walked away with a ticket to finals.

The Star

Despite the loss, it was a special day for Hawthorn star Shaun Burgoyne, who equalled the League record for the most games by an Indigenous player, matching the 372-game career tally of Sydney great Adam Goodes. The 36-year-old delivered early with two sharp goals and 18 possessions.

The Moment

Halfway through the third term, after seven straight behinds from the Hawks, Jack Gunston broke the home side’s goal drought, taking a pack mark 45 metres out and converting for the six points. Moments later Liam Shiels levelled the scores with a point, but this only further ignited a fire within the Lions side as they went on to kick six straight goals, solidifying their win and giving them their first finals spot in 10 years.

The Coach

“I think the third quarter really summed it up; they had eight inside 50s for the quarter which isn’t many, and they score five goals one from those entries and we had many more entries than that and kicked one goal five.” – Clarkson
