Hawthorn has expressed its disappointment following the announcement that the 2020 VFLW season has been cancelled.

The club has invested much time and energy into the foundations of its VFLW side and was excited for the side’s prospects in 2020.

Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves has reiterated the club’s ongoing commitment to women’s football in light of the news.

Future AFLW stars to showcase their talents in the rebel VFLW Super Series

“Hawthorn’s VFLW program is a vital piece within our family. Our VFLW team is our elite women’s football program and we put great weight on the opportunity it gives us to grow women’s football and develop female talent,” Reeves said.

“The girls and coaching group of our VFLW side remain an integral part of the Hawthorn family and we will continue working closely with them despite cancelation of the VFLW competition this year.

“We endeavour to provide opportunities for our players to flourish as footballers and people throughout this period and will work closely with our Senior Coach Bec Goddard on how we can do so during this period.”

In addition to the news of the VFLW season's cancellation, AFL Victoria announced the introduction of a four-team rebel VFLW Super Series to be held in September this year.

The rebel VFLW Super Series will allow 120 of the VFLW’s best footballers to showcase their talents ahead of the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft to be held later in the year.
