Hawks fans, rejoice; Will Day has been recognised as the Round 16 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.

Day has impressed Hawks’ and AFL fans alike in his 9 games in 2020. The young gun was among Hawthorn’s best in their Round 16 battle with the Saints, as he has been in each game he has played since his debut in Round 6.

Heralded as one of the Hawks’ brightest sparks since making his debut, Day’s footy smarts combined with his composure have given Hawks fans a real glimpse into the tough defenders’ future.

GM-Football Graham Wright said the club was incredibly pleased with Day’s ability to find his spot in the side so quickly.

“Will is eager to learn, courageous, a good user of the footy and has great football awareness,” said Wright.

“He has quickly gained the respect of his teammates and coaches alike.

“I’m sure all Hawthorn members and supporters have enjoyed watching Will’s development this year.”

Taken at Pick 13 in the 2019 National Draft, Day became Hawthorn’s first top-20 selection in four years. After debuting in Round 6, he has gone on to quickly become a valuable asset to the side and, in pleasing news for Hawks’ fans, signed a two-year contract extension in August, keeping him a Hawk until at least the end of 2023.

Day’s journey to Hawthorn sees him follow in his grandfather Robert’s footsteps. Robert Day played 38 games for the Hawks, including the 1971 premiership.

Day is Hawthorn’s first Rising Star nomination in 2020, following previous nominees Mitch Lewis (2019), James Worpel and Harry Morrison (2018).
