NAIDOC Week 2020 is about celebrating and embracing the true history of this country - a history which dates back thousands of generations.

Celebrations of NAIDOC Week are being held around the country and are designed to share stories and educate on the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

Many of these events will be held virtually (after all, it's 2020!) so you can zoom in and learn from the comfort of your own home.

Below are our recommendations for a few great events you can participate in this week:

The Stars with Astronomer Karlie Noon

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2020 - 17:00 to 18:00
Cost: FREE
Overview: Do you love learning about space? Want to find out what it’s like to be an astronomer? Maybe you just want to know where to begin with stargazing. Then join us online as we chat to awesome astronomer Karlie Noon! Karlie will be sharing her passion for all things outer space as well as giving us some insight into how First Nations people interacted with the stars, its sure to be OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Animals of Dreaming

Overview: Taronga Zoo presents a live streaming of Animals of the Dreaming, an inspiring program combining two fascinating aspects of unique Australia – native animals and the Dreamtime. This program is delivered by Brewarrina Elder, Colin Hardy OAM and supported by our zoo staff. Animals of the Dreaming delivers an engaging experience of storytelling and music and introducing participants to a wide variety of unique and wonderful animals, such as a frog, possum, lizard, snake, turtle or echidna.

Explore Bush Tucker

Overview: Learn more about local native plants, their history and uses in Aboriginal Culture. Join Kaurna Elder Uncle Frank and Salisbury East Neighbourhood Centre community garden coordinator Tania in this online session.

Kids at home: Art Club

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2020 - 11:00 to Saturday, November 28, 2020 - 11:00
Cost: FREE
Overview: Developed for primary-aged children, these 45-minute artist-led activities use everyday drawing materials and are designed to stimulate creative thinking. Taylah Cole is an Indigenous textile designer and artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). Taylah’s practice is inspired by her love of nature, which comes from growing up in a beautiful place surrounded by ferns and lush trees. She is heavily influenced by her Indigenous heritage and culture, her love of plants, cats and all things art.

Overview: First Peoples of Australia (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) have the oldest living and continuous cultures in the world. First Peoples have been caring for this country since time immemorial with artists, educators, scientists and activists contributing to all areas of Australia’s community. As part of NAIDOC Week 2020, Museums Victoria has curated a range of online activities, digital interactives, videos, and resources, all celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and achievements for everyone to enjoy. From art and culture to science, activism, and education, you can explore First Peoples contributions to all areas of Australia’s society.
