First-year Hawk Josh Ward has claimed the AFL’s Round 18 Rising Star nomination following a stellar breakout game in Hawthorn’s win over West Coast on Sunday.

Ward was arguably the Hawks most dominant, collecting 34 disposals, six clearances and five tackles in a career-high game.

Such was the 18-year-old’s dominance, he racked up an incredible 618 metres gained in the rain-soaked contest at the MCG, which was a match-high.

Ward is the second Hawk to receive a Rising Star nomination in season 2022, after Jai Newcombe got the nod in Round 5.

The highly-touted youngster has taken some big strides in his rookie year, after joining Hawthorn with Pick 7 in the 2021 National Draft.

After making his senior debut in Round 1, Ward has pulled on the brown and gold nine times, averaging almost 18 possessions and three clearances per outing.

Head of Football Rob McCartney said Ward’s progression has been impressive.

“Josh’s performance on the Sunday is a credit to him and the hard work he puts in each and every week,” McCartney said.

“He continues to show a real appetite to improve his game while working closely with our coaches.

“Being just a teenager in his first season, Josh has a very bright future at Hawthorn.”
