Season summary:

Following a solid debut season, Macdonald went a step better in 2023, showing great improvement in all areas of his game to become a consistent contributor for the Hawks. The talented 20-year-old was a key link in many scoring chains for the brown and gold, with his effective ball use and dare to take the contest on. Having begun his career as a half-forward, look for Macdonald to be given greater opportunities in the midfield as he continues to develop his craft.

Best AFL game:

Macdonald showed just what his best looks like against Brisbane in Round 13, playing a significant role as the Hawks recorded upset win over the premiership-fancied Lions. The youngster collected 28 disposals and took three marks, along with booting two crucial goals.

How the coaches saw him:

“Connor had a really consistent year. He played 21 out of a possible 23 games predominately as a high half forward. He provided us with some great run, he has a really elite engine. He showed that he can play multiple positions, he played a little bit in the midfield and learnt a lot about that side of his craft. He also played a fair bit on the wing for us as well. It was great to see him add another string to his bow in just his second year. He averaged 17 disposals, which is up a fair bit from last year. His scoreboard impact jumped as well. I was really happy with Connor’s year, he has got a lot to build on coming into his third pre-season.” - Chris Newman
