Four players will undergo fitness tests this week as they push their case to return to the field for the club's AFL and VFL matches against the Pies this weekend.
Luke Breust will look to put his hand up for selection after being sidelined for the last fortnight with a back injury, while Will McCabe is aiming to overcome an illness in a bid to prove his availability.
Meantime, Ned Reeves is working his way back from a corked glute suffered in Darwin, and Noah Mraz is expected to be available after nearing his exit from concussion protocols.
Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge provided some insight on the quartet, as well as updates on Matt Hill, Mitch Lewis and Will Day below.
Luke Breust (back) - test
"Punky's a test. He's got moving and it's started to improve quite quickly now, the back issue from the knock he received two weeks ago. We've got one session to come this week with the short week, so it will be line-ball how much he gets out on Wednesday. We'll make more of a decision around his availability closer to the weekend. If not this week, it will be next week, but we have to consider what's progressed in the last two weeks and the number of sessions and time spent training, those sorts of things, just to make sure he's got enough behind him to play a full game."
Will McCabe (illness) - test
"He just woke up sick the morning of game day in the VFL. We withdrew him in the morning of the game, but he's come in today feeling a lot better. Given the continuity he's had with his body this year and stringing together a lot of back-to-back games certainly won't hurt him. He'll get back this week and get back into match play this weekend."
Noah Mraz (concussion) - test
"He's just got to go through the last stage of concussion protocols on Wednesday, but I would expect he would be available this weekend."
Ned Reeves (glute) - test
"Just from the incident in the game in Darwin, it just took a little while to settle. We thought he would be right to play last weekend but on our main session, just wasn't quite good enough so we made the decision later in the week that he wouldn't play last weekend to absolutely make sure that this week he would be a chance to play so I'm expecting him to train on Wednesday and be available to play this weekend."
Matt Hill (ankle) - 1-2 weeks
"He's tracking as expected with a syndesmosis ankle injury, and there are different levels of those, his is on the minor end, the more mild version. He's back walking, moving around and building strength. I would expect him to start moving somewhere over this weekend. It'll probably be a test for next week, but I would expect in the next two weeks that he'd be back playing football."
Mitch Lewis (knee) - 4 weeks
"Mitch has had a good week. He'll be back training with the group after this calf niggle over the last fortnight so we'll progress his football starting this week and over the next couple of weeks, aiming for that Round 16 return after the bye so that's looking really positive."
Will Day (foot) - 2-3 months
"Really pleased with how he's going. We've just had some great little markers and milestones that we've been able to hit in the last week, particularly over the weekend. He's starting AlterG running on Wednesday, which is really pleasing for him. There's some other things that have really stood out with the improvements that we've made - his range of motion in his ankle, some calf strength, those sorts of things. Some of those things have gone beyond where they've been before, which is really pleasing for him. It gives us a lot of confidence moving forward with this next phase of his training and building back into conditioning and football later in the year."
