Hawthorn takes on the top-of-the-table Collingwood in a Round 12 clash under Friday night lights at the MCG.  

The Hawks are looking to bounce back after consecutive losses to two formidable opponents, sitting at 7 wins and 4 losses for the season.

Meantime, the Pies are 9 win and 2 losses, with their losses coming to Geelong and GWS.

Last time we met

Hawthorn (133) defeated Collingwood (67) in Round 19, 2024.  

Hawthorn led for all but two and a half minutes and were never challenged in its last meeting with the Pies, securing a 66-point win at the MCG.

The Hawks kicked 10 unanswered goals to secure their win, with Jack Ginnivan delivering on the against his former side. He amassed a career-high 31 disposals, had 11 score involvements, three tackles inside 50 and booted two goals amid plenty of defining moments.

Connor Macdonald demonstrated his class with a personal best four goals, veteran goal sneak Luke Breust kicked four, while Nick Watson showed why he was taken at pick No. 5 in in 2023 AFL Draft, swatting away his goalkicking demons with three straight.

Hawthorn smashed Collingwood in the middle, accumulating a staggering 146 more disposals, 132 more inside 50s and 29 more contested possessions, on the back of an even spread of contribution led by James Worpel, Conor Nash, Jai Newcombe and Will Day.

100 years of Hawthorn v Collingwood   

  • John Kennedy Snr.’s first game coaching Hawthorn was against Collingwood in 1957, when regular coach Jack Hale had a car accident on the way to the ground.

  • Hawthorn won nine consecutive games against Collingwood from 2012 to 2016.

  • Since 1960, Hawthorn has won 13 Premierships and Collingwood has won three.

  • Hawthorn’s first home games at both Princes Park (1974) and MCG (2000) were against Collingwood.

  • Hawthorn has won 15 of its past 17 MCG games against Collingwood.

  • Hawthorn’s 125-point victory over Collingwood at Victoria Park in 1987 was the Magpies’ biggest-ever loss at their traditional home ground.

  • Peter Hudson reached 100 goals in a season for the first time against Collingwood in 1968.

  • It took until 1960 for Hawthorn to defeat Collingwood at Victoria Park, doing so by one-point with a John Peck goal after the siren.

  • Hawthorn has not played away to Collingwood at the MCG since 2017, with away games in 2020 at Sydney Showground and in 2024 at Adelaide Oval.

  • Peter Hudson flew in by helicopter before kicking eight goals against Collingwood in his comeback match at Waverley in 1973.

Getting to the game 

Please plan ahead and arrive as early as possible. Enhanced security measures will be in place at the MCG, which may increase wait times. We recommend members and fans arrive early to avoid long queues and ensure access ahead of the first bounce.

There are plenty of public transport options to get to the MCG.

By train

There are two train stations close to the MCG - Jolimont and Richmond.

Jolimont Station is north of the ground and offers a five-minute stroll through Yarra Park to the gates to the ground.

Richmond Station is on the south-eastern side of the MCG. It's a slightly longer walk to the ground, past the Punt Road Oval to the Shane Warne Stand side.

  • Buses replace trains on the Belgrave, Lilydale and Alamein lines between Parliament and Camberwell stations from 8:30pm until the last train each night Sunday 20 April to Wed 23 April.
  • Buses replace trains on the Glen Waverley Line between Richmond and Glen Waverley stations from 8:30pm until the last train each night Sunday 20 April to Wed 23 April.

Train Disruption: 

  • Buses replace trains on the Werribee Line between Werribee and Newport stations from 10:30pm Friday 30 May until 5am Saturday 31 May.
  • Buses replace trains on the Hurstbridge Line between Clifton Hill and Eltham stations from 8:45pm Friday 30 May until the last service Sunday 1 June.
  • Coaches replace trains on the Ballarat, Ararat lines and Maryborough lines between Ararat, Ballarat, Maryborough and Melton stations until 8pm Friday 30 May.  From 8pm, coaches will replace trains between Ballarat, Ararat, Maryborough and Caroline Springs until the last train on Sunday 1 June.

By tram

Three tram routes provide access to the MCG.

The No. 70 tram (Docklands/City-Wattle Park) is the closest tram stop to the ground, travelling from Flinders Street and detouring via Melbourne Park. The tram stop is a short walk across the footbridge to the ground.

Stopping on Wellington Road just north of the MCG, the No. 75 tram (City-Vermont South) travels from Flinders St, and the No. 48 (Docklands/City-North Balwyn) travels from Collins Street, both connecting the city and eastern suburbs.

 Road Disruption: 

  • Flinders Street (eastbound) is closed between Elizabeth and Swanston streets.  
  • Plenty Road in Yan Yean will be closed between Arthurs Creek Road and Hazel Glen Drive from 8pm Friday 30 May until 5am Monday 2 June.
