Cam Mackenzie will face a fitness test this week to be available for Round 1 against Essendon this Friday night.
Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge detailed Mackenzie's progression through concussion protocols, as well as what draftees Cam Nairn and Matt LeRay need to do to take to the field this weekend.
Henry Hustwaite suffered an ankle injury in the VFL practice match last Saturday, which will see him sidelined for at least a fortnight.
While Will Day and James Blanck are progressing through their rehab.
Cam Mackenzie – Concussion (Test)
“Recovered really well, back into some training today. Had a good running session over the weekend and he's moved through the concussion protocols. We'll go through his final tick-off on Wednesday, but we expect him to be available.”
Cam Nairn – Back (Test)
“He'll have a full week of training into this week. We got him through a lot of our main session last week, all of our main session and full contact drills last week. He will train this Wednesday, the VFL have a practice match Friday afternoon, and we're planning for him to play half of that game.”
Matt LeRay – Ankle (Test)
“Unfortunately, last Thursday in our main session, he rolled his ankle just towards the end of training. Given it was two days before the VFL game, just a swelling, just didn't play on the weekend. It's improved a lot since then, we've had him back on the Alter-G treadmill this week. He's touch and go for this week, and being a young player in his first year and VFL is still in practice match mode, so, you know, the threshold of pushing him this week is a little low for us, but we'll have another look at him on Wednesday whether he's straight-line running or doing some drills, we'll see and then we'll make a decision whether he plays on the weekend or not.”
Henry Hustwaite – Ankle (2-4 weeks)
“Yeah, another ankle injury out of that game. A little sorer than Matt Leray, quite sore, had to be taken out of the game. He has a scan tomorrow as well just to get some more information. Our thinking is it's a two-to-three-week injury, I've listed him two-to-four weeks, just until we get the information from that scan. But at the moment, he's in a moon boot but we expect that to turn around over the next week or two and then progress him back into some straight-line running and then some football.”
Will Day – Shoulder (3 months)
“Will's progressing really well. He's back running, doing two sessions a week on legs, building his speed again. We're doing lots of sprint work, drill work, and then we'll start layering in some longer running and conditioning over the next few weeks before we return to non-contact skills, but on track.”
James Blanck – Groin (TBC)
“He has progressed into some conditioning this week and straight-line running, so we feel he's turned the corner. And you know, we'll have to build some layers to his sessions, back-to-back sessions, given he's missed quite a bit of training since January through February. So, we'll need some time to just build some sessions and some weeks together before we progress him back to football, but we'll keep everyone updated over the next few weeks.
