Reflecting on all the topical milestones and achievements, past and present, as we head into Round 4. This is 'Footy Flashbacks'....

Hawthorn has scored 87 points in all three of its games this season, the first time in club history that it has recorded the same total in three consecutive games.

Prior to this season, there had been 21 previous cases when Hawthorn had kicked the same score in two consecutive games.

Hawthorn and St Kilda have met ten times at Docklands with Hawks winning five, losing four and having a draw. The draw between the clubs in Round 17 2010 was marked by controversy when an alleged interchange infringement cost Hawthorn a goal and led directly to one for St Kilda.

In a remarkable game, Hawthorn led by a point at quarter-time, St Kilda by the same margin at the long interval, and scores were level at the last change. Goals to Michael Osborne and Lance Franklin gave the Hawks a handy lead early in the final term, but St Kilda replied with a pair of goals to cut the margin to a point.

A Jarryd Roughead goal gave Hawthorn heart, but the final score was a St Kilda goal to bring them level at 14.3.87 to the Hawks’ 14.9.87. Ironically, the player who kicked that final St Kilda goal ended up becoming a Hawk – Ben McEvoy.

And this Sunday, McEvoy will become the 13th import from another VFL-AFL club to play 100 games for Hawthorn. It also means his former club St Kilda will take the lead as the most popular source for Hawthorn 100-gamers recruited from other VFL-AFL clubs, with McEvoy joining fellow ex-Saints Russell Greene, Joel Smith and Brent Guerra in enjoying lengthy careers in brown and gold.

Chad Wingard has become the first player to kick three goals on his Hawthorn debut since Luke Lowden in 2014. The last player with previous experience at another AFL club to kick three goals on his Hawthorn debut was Peter Everitt in 2003.

Wingard’s three goals were a long way behind the record for most goals on Hawthorn debut by an import from another club. In Round 3 1982, ex-Demon Michael Byrne kicked eight goals in his first Hawthorn appearance, beating the previous record of seven booted by former Collingwood player, Vin Doherty in Round 1 1940.

Sad news last week with the death of 1961 Premiership ruckman John Winneke. Winneke only played three seasons (1960-62) and 50 games for Hawthorn, but as first ruck he was a crucial figure in delivering the club’s first ever Premiership. He will be greatly missed.

Hawthorn and St Kilda have met 156 times with the Hawks winning 82 and the Saints 72, plus two draws. Hawthorn won 20 consecutive games against St Kilda from 1979 to 1989.

In 1999 against the Saints, Hawthorn recorded its greatest ever comeback victory, turning around a 63-point second quarter deficit to win by 13 points.

In Round 4, Hawthorn has had 41 wins, 50 defeats, two draws (1939 and 1996) and one bye (1991). The Hawks’ best Round 4 sequence was eight consecutive wins from 1974 to 1981. In recent seasons, Hawthorn has had alternating Round 4 results with victories in 2014, 2016 and 2018, but defeats in 2015 and 2017.

30 years ago, in Round 4 1989, Hawthorn took on Richmond in an Anzac Day encounter in front of 41,347 fans at Waverley Park. The first half was very even with the margin just a point in the Tigers’ favour at quarter time and a point the Hawks’ way at half-time. However, Hawthorn took control after the long interval to win by 44 points – 15.20.110 to 9.12.66. Jason Dunstall kicked eight goals and other good players included Andy Collins, Tony Hall, Gary Buckenara, Chris Mew and John Platten.

40 years ago, in Round 4 1979, the Hawks thrashed South Melbourne at Waverley by 94 points – 29.15.189 to 15.5.95. At the final change, the margin was a comparatively modest 40 points, but Hawthorn added a remarkable 11.6 to 3.0 in the last quarter. Michael Moncrieff kicked nine goals and Norm Goss, playing against his former club, booted five. Leigh Matthews (35), Geoff Ablett (33) and Terry Wallace (32) all had over 30 disposals.

50 years ago, in Round 4 1969, a 6.4.to 1.2 third quarter took Hawthorn from a narrow three-point half-time lead against Footscray at Glenferrie to a comfortable 35-point margin at the final change. The Hawks went on to win by 45 points - 19.16.130 to 12.13.85. In a rarity for the period, Peter Hudson was not the leading goalkicker for the Hawks, his four goals being exceeded by a career-high five from Neil Ferguson.

60 years ago, in Round 4 1959, Hawthorn made it three wins in a row with a 31-point victory over South Melbourne at Glenferrie – 19.14.128 to 13.19.97. John Peck starred with eight goals, and Bob Nisbet kicked three.

80 years ago, in Round 4 1939, Hawthorn played a draw against Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval, kicking 11.11.77 to the home team’s 10.17.77. Albert Naismith kicked five goals. It was the second draw in Hawthorn’s League history and with two wins, a draw, and just one defeat, the club had a positive record after four rounds for the first time since joining the VFL in 1925.

Peter Hudson holds the record for the highest number of goals by a Hawthorn player against St Kilda, kicking 12 at Glenferrie in Round 15 1971 in a match which was a preview of the season’s Grand Final. Michael Moncrieff has the best tally in Round 4, kicking nine goals at Waverley against South Melbourne in 1979.
