Presenting Blast from the Past!

Over the month of September, we will be taking you on a trip down memory lane as we look back at various moments in Hawthorn history that have occurred on the same date.

Today we rewind back to 1974…

Shane Crawford arrived at Hawthorn with the 13th Pick in the 1991 national draft.

Having grown up in the New South Wales town of Finley, Crawford attended boarding school at Assumption College in country Victoria.

It was at this famous footballing school that Crawford built a reputation as a talented on-baller with immense running capabilities.

Crawford didn't feature at senior level in his first year at the club in 1992, instead making his debut in Round 1 the following year.

In his first AFL outing, Crawford showed promise, collecting 19 possessions, eight marks and a goal.

A week later, he proved just how at home he felt on the AFL stage.

23 possessions, nine marks, five goals and, of course, three Brownlow votes.

The Hawks had a star on their hands.

By the end of his career, 'Crawf' would boast a Brownlow Medal, four All Australian honours, four Peter Crimmins Medals and a 2008 premiership medallion.

He was also club captain for six years, from 1999 to 2004.

In 2012, Crawford was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.
