Hostile environment

Perth Stadium is renowned for its atmosphere.

The crowd, the noise, the hostility.

The competition’s newest stadium can act like a cauldron for opposition teams, an unwelcoming environment for out-of-towners.

Like when it snowed in Canberra, the Hawks embraced the environment and took to the stadium knowing what to expect from a crowd predominantly made up of Eagles fans.

To walk away with a win, on the road, at Perth Stadium is certainly a feat our boys should be proud of.

The four Es

Much is spoken about the genius that is Alastair Clarkson.

However, in his press conference following Saturday’s win the football mastermind said it was four basics that got his side over the line on the weekend.

Energy, effort, endeavour and execution.

Though surely there was more to it, Clarkson said the win was the result of 22 contributors on the night, something every game plan needs.

Focussing on the long game

Though it’s disappointing we missed the finals, there were plenty of positives to take away from 2019.

The Hawks finished the season with six wins from their last eight games, including victories over finalists Collingwood, Geelong, GWS and reigning premiers West Coast.

Young players took their opportunities with both hands – James Worpel, Mitch Lewis, James Sicily, Olly Hanrahan and Conor Nash to name a few.

Experienced players led the way - Shaun Burgoyne, James Frawley, Ben McEvoy all had outstanding seasons.

There’s plenty to look forward to when the brown and gold return in the new year.
