Hawthorn midfielder Liam Shiels says the players couldn't care less where they play as the squad sets its sights on its meeting with Geelong in 16 days' time.

The Hawks are set to venture down the highway to meet the Cats in their Round 2 clash in what will be the first time the club has played at GMHBA Stadium since 2006.

Shiels explained any external commentary about the club being disappointed by the venue for their return to play was misplaced.

"We're pretty excited to get down to Geelong," Shiels said.

"I think we're just excited to be playing footy again.

"We always seem to have some pretty close games, we have a good rivalry there so I think there's an excitement across the entire competition in that way.

"GMHBA Stadium is a fair bit skinnier than other grounds around the country but I don't think that ultimately has much of an impact on the game."

The 29-year-old Shiels also said the club remained optimistic Jaeger O'Meara may be able to prove his fitness in time to take on the Cats.

Scans revealed a minor fracture in O'Meara's forehead after a training collision on Monday.

"Jaeger has been in at the club today and doing a little bit of training.

"He'll be out of contact for a couple of weeks but I think he is still a chance for Round 2."
