AFTER Hawthorn’s disappointing loss to Richmond on Saturday at the MCG, it comes as no surprise Tigers players dominate the voting in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.

In Hawthorn’s 41-point loss, only one Hawks player – Brian Lake, received a vote from the coaches.

Lake polled one vote in the award for his role in shutting down Tigers spearhead Jack Riewoldt.

The Tigers full forward kicked Richmond’s first two goals of the game and was looming large before the move was made at the first change.

The Hawks defender conceded only one goal to Riewoldt for the remainder of the game and went on to gather 19 disposals and take 10 marks in his side’s loss.

He was one of Hawthorn’s best alongside wingman, Isaac Smith.

For the Tigers, the coaches were split on who was best afield, with Trent Cotchin and Alex Rance polling nine votes each – meaning one coach viewed Cotchin as best and the other, Rance (five votes in the most a player can poll from one coach).

Cotchin was dominant in the midfield, gathering 34 disposals, 18 of which were contested, nine clearances and nine tackles.

Rance’s reputation as a stopper was enhanced by his role on Lance Franklin, restricting the star Hawk to 11 disposals and only one goal.

Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric also polled votes, receiving five for his 30 hit outs, 14 disposals and seven clearances. He was clearly the dominant ruckman on the ground.

Troy Chaplin polled four votes for his shut-down role on in-form forward and joint Coleman Medal leader Jarryd Roughead, while Bachar Houli polled two votes for his 28 disposals and five inside 50s.
