O'Brien's 2018 may not have been his best year of football but the 25-year-old came out in 2019 to prove himself, with one of his strongest seasons to date. He played an equal career-high 16 games and averaged nearly 13 disposals. He began his year at Box Hill, however two impressive outings saw the swingman elevated to the senior side in Round 6. After playing his first 11 games at senior level in defence, he made a move to the forward line in Round 18 and contributed to the Hawks’ strong finish to the season. O’Brien kicked all 12 goals for 2019 in the last five rounds and with this strong finish, was rewarded with a contract extension that will see him remain at the club until the end of 2021.
