Hawthorn has locked away its final pair of uncontracted players with Jackson Callow and Jack Saunders signing on ahead of season 2022.

Callow and Saunders have both agreed to one-year rookie deals which will see the duo enter their second seasons as Hawks next year.

The Hawks selected Callow with Pick 17 in the mid-season rookie draft, after the well-built key forward proved a dominant force for Norwood in the SANFL across the first half of the season.

Despite an interrupted VFL season, the 194cm 19-year-old made a telling impression in his first year in the brown and gold, with his contested marking strength and exceptional aerobic ability.

Also 19 years of age, Jack Saunders became a Hawk via Pick 4 in last year’s rookie draft.

Possessing the rare athletic combination of speed and endurance, Saunders grew week-by-week across his eight appearances for Box Hill in 2021.

Head of Football Rob McCartney said the pair had adapted themselves well to life as professional footballers in their first campaigns in the brown and gold.

“We’ve been impressed with both of these boys’ desire to learn and improve across their first years with us,” McCartney said.

“Jackson trained with us over the pre-season and, when we didn’t pick him up in the pre-season draft, he went away, worked on his game and bettered himself ahead of the mid-season draft.

“Similarly, Jack came to the club with a bit of an injury but his commitment to his craft really shone through towards the back half of the year when we started to see some real development in his game.

“It’s an exciting time for the club with our list now set ahead of the national draft in which we have three picks inside the top 25.

“We’ve also got the likes of James Sicily and Jack Gunston, who played one game between them in 2021, really working towards strong campaigns in 2022.”
