Hawthorn young gun Josh Weddle has been recognised as the AFL’s Round 10 Rising Star nominee following a dominant display in the Hawks’ win over West Coast on Sunday.
In just his fourth AFL appearance, the 18-year-old had a career-best performance in Tasmania with two goals, 28 disposals, seven marks and seven intercept possessions.
Highlighting his signature pace and endurance, he also racked up 495 metres gained.
Weddle is the first Hawk to receive a Rising Star nomination for the season, following in the footsteps of Josh Ward and Jai Newcombe last year.
After joining Hawthorn with the 18th selection in the 2022 national draft as a defender, the emerging star has showcased his versatility with three goals in his past two games.
Since making his debut in Round 7, Weddle has averaged 15.8 disposals, 4.5 marks and 269.8 metres gained per outing.
Hawthorn General Manager of Football Rob McCartney was delighted to see Weddle rewarded for his breakout performance.
“From the moment Josh arrived at Hawthorn, he has consistently demonstrated a willingness to utilise all the resources available to him to develop his game,” McCartney said.
“His work ethic and high standards have been impressive, with these attributes allowing him to quickly earn the trust and respect of his teammates.
“He has been steadily improving each week since making his AFL debut in Round 7, with Sunday's game showcasing his aerial presence, leg speed and thirst to compete.
"We are extremely proud that Josh has received a Rising Star nomination for this performance and are excited by the prospect of him further developing his game over a long career at Hawthorn.”
