Harry Morrison will this week become just the third Hawk to play 100 games wearing number one.
Morrison played the first 22 games of his career in number 35 in 2017-18, before switching to number one at the start of the 2019 season. At that time, there had not been a number one for a decade, with the number allocated to represent the fans, but Morrison’s personal connection with an earlier number one, Ken Judge, prompted the club to change the policy and allow the wearing of the number by a player.
The two previous players to reach 100 games in number one were Les Kaine (103 games, 1956-62) and Ray Jencke (188 games, 1987-97). Kaine played his whole career in the number, whereas Jencke moved to it after six games in number 42 in 1986.
Both Kaine (1961) and Jencke (1991) played in Premierships in the number, with the other Flag-winning number ones being Norm Goss (1978) and Judge (1983).

Bailey Macdonald’s spectacular last quarter goal against Port Adelaide was the first time in 2025 that a Hawthorn player kicked a first career goal for the club. The fact that this happened as late as Round 19 makes it the latest for such an occurrence for 36 years.
In 1989, the club went through the complete season without a first Hawthorn career goal. It remains the only year which did not provide a new goalkicker and, if 2025 remains with just one first-time goalkicker, it will become the only season with just one new goalkicker. Indeed, there are only two seasons – 1963 and 1981 - with as few as two new Hawthorn goalkickers.
There are four current players who have played AFL games for the club and not yet recorded a goal – Seamus Mitchell (28 games), James Blanck (24), Josh Battle (18) and Tom Barrass (17), plus seven players on the list yet to debut. The most recent first Hawthorn career goalkicker before Macdonald was Massimo D’Ambrosio in Round 17 last season.
Macdonald’s goal brings the number of players to have kicked at least one goal for the club to 715 out of the 975 individuals to represent Hawthorn in the VFL-AFL.

In the 20 seasons from 2001 to 2020, Hawthorn won 22 of the 25 games played against Carlton (including all nine home games). Carlton then won the three encounters from 2021 to 2023, before the wheel turned again last season, with the Hawks recording a thumping 74-point victory, followed up with a 20-point victory earlier this season.
Hawthorn’s period of dominance included a sequence of 14 consecutive wins from 2005 to 2016.
Despite the run of success this century, Hawthorn still trails the head-to-head against Carlton, 67 to 106 after 173 games. The current deficit of 39 is at least an improvement compared to when it reached 57 in both 1983 and 2000.

This week’s match date of 24 July also saw Hawthorn playing Carlton 10 years ago. On 24 July 2015, the Hawks thrashed the Blues at Docklands by 138 points - 27.11.173 to 4.11.35. Jack Gunston kicked six, while Jordan Lewis and Luke Hodge led a dominant midfield.
This Thursday night will be the fourth occasion on which Hawthorn and Carlton have clashed in Round 20, with the Hawks hoping for a change of fortune after losing to the Blues in 1970, 1971 and 1983. Although, it should be noted, that in all three of those cases, Hawthorn then did not lose another game for the season, most notably in 1971 and 1983 when that meant Premiership glory at the end of the following month.

Overall, Hawthorn has played 57 matches in Round 20, winning 32 and losing 25. The Hawks won in Round 20 for six consecutive seasons from 2010 to 2015, with more recent victories coming against Essendon (2018), Brisbane Lions (2021) and Adelaide (2024). There was a Round 20 in 1945 and then in every season since 1968, apart from 2020.

10 years ago, in Round 20 2015, Hawthorn recorded a comfortable 36-point win against Geelong at the MCG on a Saturday night – 19.7.121 to 12.13.85. Cyril Rioli kicked six goals, Luke Hodge four and Luke Breust three. Rioli got three Brownlow votes for one of four times in his career and 10 Coaches Votes for one of five times in his career.
20 years ago, in Round 20 2005, Hawthorn wore colours which were not predominantly brown and gold for the only time in its VFL-AFL history. The team wore a red, white and blue heritage guernsey in a game against Essendon at the MCG which saw Hawthorn defeat the Bombers for the first time since 1997. The Hawks won by 13 points – 17.15.117 to 16.8.104 – with Ben Dixon kicking four goals and Trent Croad and Simon Taylor booting three apiece. Luke Hodge had 36 disposals and Shane Crawford had 30.

In the Round 20s played 30, 40 and 50 years ago, Hawthorn lost on each occasion by under a goal. In 1975, Footscray pulled off a major upset, as the Hawks lost just their third game for the season, going down by two points at Waverley. In 1985, a miserable day at Footscray saw the home team win by five points – 5.13.43 to 5.8.38. In 1995, the margin was three points in a loss to Collingwood at the MCG.

Hawthorn’s great goal-kickers never managed big bags of goals against Carlton. Peter Hudson, Leigh Matthews and Jason Dunstall all had a top score of seven goals against the Blues. The best individual tallies for Hawthorn against Carlton are nine by Peter Knights in 1985, eight by Garry Young (in a losing side) in 1959 and another eight by Jarryd Roughead in 2009.
However, two Hawthorn forwards did record their 100th goal for the season against the Blues, with Dunstall doing so in 1989 and Lance Franklin in 2008.
Dunstall holds the Round 20 Hawthorn individual goals record, kicking 12 goals against Essendon in 1992. Other 10 goal-plus Round 20 hauls were Dunstall’s 11 versus Collingwood in 1990 and Michael Moncrieff’s 10 against Essendon in 1972.
