Box Hill travelled to Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday, walking away with a 20-point victory over Sandringham.
The Round 5 clash saw the Hawks lead for the game’s duration, despite being tested by the Zebras at times.
Eleven AFL-listed Hawks took to the field, with the likes of Matt Hill and Jaime Uhr-Henry showing career-best efforts, with a couple of VFL-listed youngsters making their debut in the brown and gold.
Senior Coach David Mirra detailed the performance of the AFL-listed Hawks who took to the field in Round 5 below.
Henry Hustwaite (31 disposals, 11 clearances, nine tackles)
“Another terrific performance. His stoppage craft was excellent, connecting with the ruck and then standing up in tackles and distributing the ball cleanly, which started many of our chains. Eighteen contested possessions with nine tackles and 11 clearances speak to the quality of his output.”
Bailey Macdonald (29 disposals, seven intercept possessions, six marks)
“Accumulated many possessions and generated and then stayed involved in offensive chains, using his link-up overlap run to create opportunities to score. Thirteen handball receives, 20 uncontested possessions, and a disposal efficiency over 97 per cent indicated how damaging he was.”
Bodie Ryan (25 disposals, 11 intercept possessions, two tackles)
“A pillar down back, Bodie was a key to our intercept game, gathering 11 intercept possessions and repelling many opposition attacks. Each week, we look for Bodie to take players on and win his individual battles, and he is showing great progress in that area”
Ollie Greeves (Two goals, 21 disposals, six clearances)
“It was pleasing to see Ollie take his chances and kick two goals playing as a midfielder. His stoppage craft is developing, and he was able to generate six clearances. He was strong in the contest, finishing with 10 contested possessions.”
Max Ramsden (One goal, 27 hitouts, 18 disposals)
“Played a combination of ruck and forward again. He managed to get 27 hitouts and kick a goal. He was able to get some dominance from centre bounce and connect well with our mids, and then used his running power to get around the ground. Max is sharpening his contested marking craft, striving to become an impactful target overhead.
Cam Nairn (One goal, 17 disposals, three marks)
“Cam continues to play a wing/forward role. He showed yet again his capacity for attacking ball use. He provided a spark in the contest at the start of the fourth quarter when we needed it, providing strong pressure, causing intercept and having shots at goal.”
Will McCabe (Three goals, 15 disposals, seven marks)
“Back at VFL level after his debut against Port Adelaide, kicking a clutch goal. Will had a great game, he looked to have spring in his jumping, taking a few strong overhead marks. He had power with bursts of speed and kicked a goal on the run. He showed his strong athletic profile, finishing the game with three goals and seven marks.”
Matt Hill (Two goals, 13 disposals, three clearances)
“Arguably the best game Hilly has played in his short career to date since moving across to Aussie Rules from rugby. He played as a small forward, but it was in the midfield where he had his biggest impact on the game. The highlight was his fend-off and goal in the second quarter. He looked explosive and very damaging, kicking two goals.”
Jaime Uhr-Henry (One goal, 28 hitouts, 11 hitouts)
“Finished with 28 hitouts and kicking a goal from the ruck at a forward 50 stoppage, which everyone loved. Like 'Ramma' (Max Ramsden), Jaime’s ruck craft was a feature this week, allowing our mids to win first possession. His movement around the ground meant he stayed involved and supported our mids as an option in the chain.”
Noah Mraz (11 disposals, six marks, one intercept possession)
“We expect Noah to compete and beat his direct opponent every week. He did that this week and nullified his impact on the game. Whilst he would have loved to impact the contest more in the air, he still took six marks and distributed the ball well.”
Cody Anderson (Nine disposals, five tackles, three clearances)
“Played as a forward. We rely on Cody to create pressure inside our forward 50, and he was able to do that, laying five tackles. He also missed a few opportunities, kicking two points, one that hit the flag resting on the goal post which was very unlucky, but he did set up a few goals and create opportunities for others.
A few VFL player shout-outs…
Alex Lukic and Justin Currie
“Special mention to Alex Lukic and Justin Currie, who played their first matches for Box Hill. Alex played in the VFL Young Guns game the day before and then backed it up the next day, playing two games for the weekend. It was a great effort from him, he could have kicked two goals but just missed! Justin played a defensive role and had some big spoils at important times, and used the ball well and played to our system.”
Box Hill returns to the Kennedy Community Centre this Friday, 1 May, hosting Collingwood in what will be the club's 500th match of the Box Hill Hawks era. The clash marks the first at the venue under lights, with ball up from 7.05 pm.
