Hawthorn’s VFLW side has suffered a disappointing loss going down to Geelong by just seven points at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.

In perfectly sunny conditions, the stage was set for this highly anticipated Grand Final rematch. After a tight contest all day, the Cats got the lead late in the last quarter to secure their win at 4.7 (31) to 3.6 (24), their first win against the Hawks since 2017.

The first quarter saw Hawthorn grab the momentum early with debuting Hawk, Tayah Kelly, showing off her quick skills, breaking through Geelong defenders to then kick to Tamara Luke, who slotted the first goal of the day.

Only moments later, Rosie Dillon got the Hawks on the scoreboard again with a low kick that, with the help of Jess Sibley, who had a one-on-one with a Geelong defender, went through the goals untouched.

Hawthorn had a 13 point lead at the opening break, but this didn’t stay for long, Geelong quickly hitting the scoreboard in the second term with back-to-back goals from Breanna Beckley and Richelle Cranston. These two goals partnered with a scoreless quarter from the Hawks left the Cats in front by one point at the major break.

The contest continued to be tight in the second half. A goal from Clare O’Donnell got the Hawks back in the front but the Cats were quick to respond and once again brought the scores back to level heading into to the final term.

Geelong had the jump on Hawthorn in the last quarter after a quick goal from Cranston. With Hawthorn unable to respond, the goal secured the Cats seven point win.

Hawthorn will be looking to get back on the winner’s list next week when they face Carlton on July 13th at La Trobe University, 11:00am.
