Hawthorn’s VFLW side has been left with mixed emotions finishing with a draw against Carlton at La Trobe University on Saturday.

The Hawks got off to a promising start with multiple inside 50’s, but they were unable to convert, managing three behinds in a row.

Rosie Dillon, in true Dillon form, exploded through a stoppage with speed and snapped a goal for the first major of the day. This energy from the midfielder continued for the rest of the game, earning her another best on ground.

Carlton were quick to respond, Sarah Hosking getting the home side on the scoreboard and bringing the margin to five points at quarter time.

Hawks came out fighting in the second term with superior marking skills shown by Sarah Perkins, winning a two-on-one contest to then line up and register the Hawks’ second major.

With Hawthorn’s defenders keeping the Blues goalless for the rest of the quarter the Hawks had a nine point lead heading into the major break.

The second half saw the winds get stronger and left both sides unable to get the ball through for a goal, leaving the last quarter to be the game decider.

The final term was a tight contest and had every supporter on the edge of their seats.

A free kick to Bryannen Gurr in front of Carlton’s goals gave the home side its first lead of the day and put them six points in front with only minutes to go.

The Hawks kept fighting right until the very last minute and thanks to a late goal from young gun Kara Henderson, the scores were brought back to level with the final siren setting the draw at 3.6 (24) a piece.

Next week Hawthorn head back home to Box Hill City Oval, where they will face the competition’s second strongest side in Richmond.
