Pup out of the shadows

Liam Shiels has had a career surrounded by some of the best in the business. Teammates that have joined him at centre bounces include Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge, Jaeger O’Meara, Jordan Lewis and Tom Mitchell. It’s not uncommon for the tackling machine to fly under the radar. But in his 200th game you felt like it was Shiels’ time to shine. Not only was the mid given the task of playing on one of the game’s best in Patrick Dangerfield, but he went on to lead the game in disposals and get a couple of handy goals to his name as well. What a way to celebrate.

Youthful forward combo

Much has been spoken about Geelong’s new look forward line in 2019. However, after yesterday’s match you feel a lot more will be spoken about the Hawks new combo that worked together like a well-oiled machine. Mitch Lewis and Tim O’Brien stood out kicking three goals apiece, however don’t forget Connor Nash and Ollie Hanrahan, who both played their roles on the day. Against a number of All Australian defenders, the kids did alright.

Big Mac

Is there anything Ben McEvoy can’t do? The Hawks’ tall timber has shown this season he can match it with anyone. Yesterday was no exception. Against Rhys Stanley McEvoy won 44 hit-outs, had 13 disposals (of which 11 of them were contested), five score involvements and five intercept possessions. Once again it was another big game for the big man, but it’s what we have come to expect from the number 7.
