Presenting Blast from the Past!

Over the month of September, we will be taking you on a trip down memory lane as we look back at various moments in Hawthorn history that have occurred on the same date.

Today we rewind back to 1987…

Hawthorn finished the 1987 home and away season in second spot.

Sydney finished in third spot.

The two sides were set to clash in a bumper qualifying final at Waverley Park as the Swans continued to hunt the club’s maiden grand final berth.

The stage was set.

The Swans started slowly on the day, trailing by 21 points.

But then it got worse.

And worse.

And worse.

A 27-point half-time Hawks lead extended out to a final margin of 99 points as Allan Jeans ruthlessly demolished Tom Hafey’s Swans.

The run-away victory remains the biggest finals win in Hawthorn history.

Dermott Brereton kicked six, Jason Dunstall five but it was Gary Buckenara who was best afield with 32 disposals, 10 marks and five goals of his own.

The loss took a toll on Sydney, who failed to qualify for finals in any of the following eight seasons.
