Hawthorn defender Tom Barrass is closing in on a return from his hamstring injury, needing to pass a fitness test to be available for selection in Round 13.

The 30-year-old has missed three matches after sustaining the injury during the Hawks' Round 9 loss to Fremantle in Perth.

Unfortunately, fellow defender Jack Scrimshaw won't play this week due to ongoing knee soreness.

After experiencing neck soreness and being a late out for Hawthorn's Round 12 win over St Kilda, Conor Nash will have to get through training this week to be made available for selection on Friday night against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

Following his hamstring injury, James Blanck is set to return to VFL football after Box Hill's bye.

High Performance Manager Peter Burge provided an update on each player below.

Tom Barrass - Hamstring (Test)

"Tom's returned to full training. We have another main session on Wednesday this week as well, which he'll participate in, and then we have team selection. But given that full week of training and if all's going well, he would be available for this week."

Conor Nash - Neck (Test)

"He just woke up with a neck issue and just had some referred pain from that last week. In our captain's run, he had shown he was right to go, but the next day, he woke up, and he'd taken a step backwards, so we made the call not to play him. He's improved again since, and on Monday, he completed full training, but it was more non-contact. We have a full contact session on Wednesday, and we'll need to assess him through that session, then we'll make a call after Wednesday."

Jack Scrimshaw - Knee (TBC)

"It's been a frustrating one for Jack, first and foremost, and for us as well. We had some progression last week, and we were in a position where we thought he was going to play last weekend. He had fully trained on Tuesday but then didn't pull up so well from that session, so we took a step back and have built him up over the weekend just gone. He completed half of training on Monday, but we're still in a position where we feel he's not ready to play, and we need to get some more work under the belt and get some more back-to-back sessions where he's pulling up better. So we'll do that over the next two weeks with the bye coming up, and then we'll reassess for the game after the bye, but until then, we're going to progress his training, get some more work under his belt, and set him up for the second part of the season."

James Blanck - Hamstring (1 week)

"He's progressing really well. He's out there running at 80% speed and kicking the football. He feels really good. We're just going to take a little longer, and with the bye coming up, to get some more work under his belt. He's had a very interrupted season to date, and we want to make sure he has an uninterrupted finish to the season. So he'll be back after the bye."
