Hawthorn defender Jarman Impey will be sidelined for at least the next two games after suffering a hamstring injury.
Impey reported soreness during the second quarter of the Round 15 game against Gold Coast, before follow-up scans revealed a minor medial hamstring injury.
Elsewhere, Jack Gunston and Conor Nash have been ruled out for Friday night's clash with GWS as the club opts to take a conservative approach with their respective injuries.
Hawthorn High Performance Manager Peter Burge provided an update on each player below, as well as Matt Leray, Jack Scrimshaw, Max Beattie and James Blanck.
Jack Gunston - Foot (1 week)
"He’s progressed again. Last week, we listed him as a test. He did some training on Monday, but didn’t pull up quite where we wanted him to on Tuesday. So what it’s told us over the last week and a half or so is we’ve got to a point where that looks good for him to train, and then we’ve had the boots on, and we start changing direction, and he’s just not been quite ready for that, so we’ve taken a step back. We’ve gone back to straight-line running in the last week in runners, and that’s been really good. Today, he had the boots on and was running fast and changing direction. We want to get a full week of that this week, and progress it to training next week. So, at this stage, we’ve listed him as one week, and we’re really optimistic that he’ll be right to go next week."
Matt Leray - Concussion (1 week)
"He's progressing through the protocols. He’s been doing some conditioning, change of direction and kicking the footy. There are a number of steps that he will need to go through with the protocols. But we’ve also extended those protocols, so he misses two games, given he’s a first-year player, and the second time this year we’ve had to deal with a concussion. He’s in good spirits, and he’s completely fine in terms of health nd how he’s feeling. But we’re taking the conservative approach and building some conditioning into him, and he’ll be back the following week."
Jack Scrimshaw - Knee (1 week)
"He’s certainly ready to start training later this week with the group. He won’t play this weekend, but we’ve been able to really build some conditioning into him, some speed and some change of direction. We want to put him in a position where he’s going to succeed, so he will resume training with the main group early next week, and we’ll look to play some minutes next week."
Jarman Impey - Hamstring (2-3 weeks)
"Jarman just reported in the second quarter that he wasn’t comfortable after an acceleration. He came to the bench and got assessed, and then we decided he would take no further part in the game. He’s got a medial hamstring injury. It’s certainly on the minor end. We’re expecting him only to miss two to three games, so he’ll be back running this week, and we’ll progress and build his conditioning with Jack Price and look to play over that time frame. We’ll just put him through the rehab process and get him up and moving, and we look forward to seeing him back."
Max Beattie - Ankle (3-5 weeks)
"He’s made some progress, certainly with clinical testing, calf raises, those sorts of strength measures have improved. We’re very close to resuming running. But with syndesmosis injuries, they do take some time, and sometimes they can progress more slowly, sometimes they can come up really quickly. We’ll have better information over the next week or two once he starts running. Generally, it’s when you move into the change of direction of training that you get a better idea of how they’re going to progress back into training. We’re a little bit off that at the moment."
James Blanck - Hamstring (TBC)
"Unfortunately, a small incident in the second quarter of the (VFL) game. He reported some hamstring soreness, a small incident running at speed. The scan has come back, it's quite positive, and it’s certainly not a long-term injury. But we’re not putting a time frame on it, just given it’s a repeat injury. He was back out running today. He ran at 60% today, and we’re three days post-game. So, the same area, irritation around the scarring of the previous injury, unfortunately. We’ll put a plan together over the next week about what it looks like for his return, but the main thing is that we want him to return and continue to play the rest of the season. So we’ll sit down, and we’ll put that together, and we’ll keep conditioning him, and look forward to when he returns."
Conor Nash - Neck (TBC)
"It’s a complicated injury. It’s a nerve-related injury, which can take time, and it certainly is taking time. It's slow. We’ve consulted specialists in different sports, NRL and rugby. It’s frustrating for Conor, and it’s frustrating for us as well, but we have to do the right thing here and wait till he gets full strength back and full power back, which he’s not there with. He can condition, he can run, he can do non-contact skills, and he’s doing all of that at the moment. So we’re able to keep that going, but until the other strength measures and clinical measures get to the level they need to be, we can’t resume contact. We’re in that holding pattern, and it’s just time, and we need time."
