Review

It was a year of frustration for Ryan Schoenmakers, who, after playing such a pivotal role in last year’s premiership triumph, was sidelined through injury for much of the season.

After playing the first three games of the season, Schoenmakers sustained a persistent groin injury which derailed the majority of his 2016 campaign.

But the 25-year-old returned for Hawthorn’s Round 23 clash against Collingwood and played his best game for the year in the qualifying final against Geelong, when he collected 16 disposals, five marks and two goals.

With Jarryd Roughead’s playing future still up in the air, he looms as an important player for the Hawks as a key forward – both Schoenmakers and the club will be hoping he gets a full pre-season under his belt and a better run with injury in 2017.

A word from: Brett Ratten

“Ryan started the year but got injured and worked extremely hard to get back into the team.

“Finished the season in the seniors which was great. He’s a very important player for us, he provides enormous run for a big man and also creates great contests down the line, which we know through last year’s Grand Final.

“We missed him through a period of the year, but with him getting a full pre-season he should be back to his best in 2017.”
