Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a fantastic opportunity to learn about ways in which we can support and show respect to Indigenous culture.

One such way is by performing an Acknowledgement of Country.  According to Common Ground, an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ is an opportunity to acknowledge, and pay respect to, the Traditional Owners and ongoing custodians of the land - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. An acknowledgement can be made by anybody, Indigenous or non-Indigenous. An Acknowledgement of Country will often highlight the unique position of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australian culture and history.

An Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners recognises the continuing connection of Aboriginal Traditional Owners to Country. Hawthorn Football Club supports Welcomes to Country and Acknowledgements of Traditional Owners as an important part of the process of reconciliation.

It's your turn!

We’d like to encourage our members to learn about the cultural meaning behind Acknowledgements of Country. By uploading your own Acknowledgement of Country video, you’ll go into the running to win a 2020 Hawthorn Indigenous guernsey, signed by the club’s five Indigenous players.

We’ll collate our favourite entries into a content piece to be shared via Hawthorn’s social channels, and one lucky entrant will take home the signed Indigenous guernsey.

A few tips:

  • Research! You could find out which group is the traditional owners of the land on which you are on today and acknowledge them specifically. As the Hawks are currently in the Barossa Valley, our Acknowledgement of Country pays respect to the Peramangk, Ngadjuri and Kaurna people, the traditional custodians of the land on which we currently meet. You can use this map to help you determine which group to acknowledge.
  • Get creative! An acknowledgement of country can be personalised to reflect your own thoughts and experiences.
