Hawks recruit Tom Phillips jumped on to Instagram live this week to field questions from the Hawthorn faithful.

He covered topics ranging from golf to his first impressions of Clarko.

Here's a recap of what he had to say.

Which young guys are catching Gunners' eye?

On his favourite Hawks teammate

"My locker neighbour is Blake 'Dimma' Hardwick and Howie who are both pretty good guys. Jaeger has been pretty good to me so far and out at training. Probably Liam Shiels too, I played golf with him the other day."

On favourite team growing up

"Well, the first ever footy jumper I was in was a Hawks jumper because my dad and uncle used to be the fitness and high performance guys here at the club about 20 years ago now. But, after about five or six years of that, I became a Bombers fan until I obviously got drafted to Collingwood then that all changed! And it's all changed again! Back to the brown and gold again!"

On his goals for 2021

"My biggest goal is to come in and play my role and get around the boys. I want to lift the energy and lift the spirits after what was a pretty different 2020 season for us all. I think what we've already identified at the Hawks is there's a lot of talent and potential so hopefully for this year everyone can step up, keep working hard, listen to the coaches and hopefully we can all become better players."

On which players he looks up to

"Sammy Mitchell is one guy that had amazing leadership and his qualities were a level above the rest as well. He's a guy I looked up to a lot. Also Scott Pendlebury at the old club, both when I was growing up and then playing alongside him."

On Clarko

"He's been great, he is a unique individual. I think we get along pretty well. He is a bit of a jokester, he loves to have a laugh and have fun. Everyone knows him as the great coach that he is, he is well known for that, but I think he is a great people person as well and he seems like a super guy to go have dinner with and be your mate as well. He invests in the playing group and, despite only being here a week, I've really felt that. He's been awesome for me so far."

On areas of improvement in his game

"I think my strengths have always been on the outside, running and linking up, connecting the backs and forwards whilst playing on the wing. I think there's an opportunity, being on the wing or giving a chop-out inside, to help the team with my versatility. So I want to continue to be able to play inside the contest, so I just want to be able get a good balance in my game this year."

On future time trials

"I didn't get near it this year, CJ was flying and did a really good PB. I have a bit to work on from that perspective but I'm feeling relatively fit, although at the same time I've got a bit of improvement to go with my fitness and conditioning. I think that will come at the right time though as we move towards games which I'm really looking forward to."

On his golf handicap

"My golf handicap is in and around 15, 16. I don't have an official one but if I'm playing I am usually around there. I played with Liam Shiels, Blake Hardwick and Will Day. Shielsy is probably one of the better ones along with Mitch Lewis, Jack Scrimshaw. There's a lot of guys who play golf - I haven't got quite around to playing with everyone just yet."

On who is flying this pre-season

"Jaeger O'Meara has been pretty good. CJ is flying, Finn Maginness, Dylan Moore - there's a heap of blokes, it's a hard one to pick."

On his brother Ed playing at Box Hill

"Yeh, very excited. It will be great to play at the same club as him and hopefully he enjoys the year."
