To win on Thursday night, Hawthorn will have to end a sequence of eight consecutive games versus Gold Coast which have been won by the home team.

In fact, of all 18 matches between the Hawks and Suns, the home team has won 15, the only away successes being by Hawthorn at Carrara in 2011 and 2014, and Gold Coast at the MCG in 2017.

Since that 2017 Suns’ away win, Hawthorn has won its four home games, at Launceston (2018 and 2022), Docklands (2019) and Adelaide Oval (2020), with Gold Coast winning its four at Carrara (2023 and 2024), SCG (2021) and Darwin (2022).

Hawthorn won its first eight games against Gold Coast from 2011 to 2016, which was a better starting record than against any other club. The overall record between the clubs is currently 12-6 in Hawthorn’s favour.

Luke Breust has played in 16 of Hawthorn’s 18 games against Gold Coast, only missing games at the MCG in 2017 and last season’s encounter on the Gold Coast. He kicked his first four-goal bag against Gold Coast in the club’s first meeting in his sixth game (having been the sub in his first five) in Round 13, 2011, and his first five-goal haul was also against the Suns in his 16th game, in Round 24 of the same season.

Breust is also up to equal fourth on the Hawthorn all-time games list, now having played 305 games, equal with two giants of the club in Shane Crawford and Luke Hodge.

When Hawthorn played at Darwin’s Marrara ground in 2022, it became the 33rd venue at which the club has played a VFL/ AFL game. It also meant that the Hawks had played a game in every Australian state and territory. The number of venues at which Hawthorn has played has subsequently reached 35, with further new venues being Bellerive, later in 2022, and Norwood in 2023.

Regarding grounds, it is 60 years this round since Hawthorn played at Moorabbin for the first time, the 17th venue to host the brown and gold in a league game. That Round 10 1965 game was not a happy occasion as the Hawks lost by 81 points – 24.12.156 to 11.9.75 – with captain-coach Graham Arthur a rare shining light with 29 disposals.

James Worpel has got the perfect 10 coaches’ votes for the sixth time in his Hawthorn career, having previously done so twice in 2019, once in 2023 and twice in 2024. Only James Sicily with eight has received more perfect 10s for Hawthorn among the current playing group, with Jack Gunston, like Worpel, having received six.

Hawthorn’s sequence of consecutive winning quarters extended to nine by winning the first quarter on Saturday against Melbourne, but ended when the Demons won the second quarter. This left it the equal twelfth best sequence in club history, with the record of 13 (achieved in 1963, 1988 and 1989) remaining unchallenged.

Hawthorn has a 7-2 record after nine games for the sixth time in its VFL-AFL history, with 2025 joining 1957, 1969, 1978, 1988 and 2011. The Hawks have been 8-1 on eight occasions (most recently in 2013), these seasons being only bettered by the 9-0 start in 2008.

Last Saturday’s crowd of 50,351 means Hawthorn’s first five MCG games in 2025 have all attracted attendances of over 50,000, an unprecedented occurrence. The previous highest number was four out of the first five in 2015, a season when seven of the Hawks’ nine home and away games at the MCG attracted over 50,000.

Round 10 has been one of Hawthorn’s best rounds, with 51 wins and 48 losses from 99 games, having had the bye in 2020. In recent years, Hawthorn had consecutive Round 10 Launceston wins, defeating Brisbane Lions by five points in 2022 and West Coast by 116 points in 2023, before a heartbreaking one-point loss against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Round 10 last season. Hawthorn has not played a Round 10 game in Victoria since 2018.

Jarryd Roughead’s six goals against Gold Coast in his final game in 2019 is the record for Hawthorn against the Suns, surpassing the bags of five kicked by Luke Breust (2011), Lance Franklin (2013) and Jack Gunston (2014, 2017 and 2022).
