After extending his time in the brown and gold for another four years, young gun Josh Weddle has explained the reasons behind his decision to commit to the Club.
Speaking to the media after his re-signing, the 21-year-old reflected on his exciting first three years at the Hawks while looking ahead to what the future holds for him and his teammates in the brown and gold.
We summarised the key points from his press conference below.
On re-signing with the club
“I think when the decision came to it, I was very happy to stay at Hawthorn. Ultimately, it came down to where I wanted to play my footy, and I play my best footy at Hawthorn. I’m very happy with the relationships I have with Sam (Mitchell) and with all the players as well. I’m very happy that it went down the way it did. The first three years in the league have been awesome. I wouldn’t have asked for a better club to go to, so I’m very grateful that Hawthorn obviously wanted to keep me around. I didn’t really look into moving.”
On the main driver behind his decision
“I think that the direction of the club and where we’re headed, the two finals series that I’ve experienced, I feel like I’m really grateful for where the club is heading. I’m really looking forward to it, and I want to be a part of it, so that was the main driver.”

On what the future holds for him on the field
“I think it’s being versatile in different roles, as you’ve seen throughout the first three years of my career. Learning in the pre-season in the midfield, it showed a little bit on the weekend (Monday) against Geelong, so I think for me, it’s about getting comfortable in every single position and being able to do it to the best I can, and I think just taking the game on like I do in every area of the ground.”
