Tom Barrass is available for selection for this Friday night's Round 15 clash against Gold Coast after he was given the green light to return from a hamstring injury.
Jack Gunston (foot) will be put through his paces during tomorrow's main training session as he pushes his case to be deemed fit to face the SUNS on Friday, while Conor Nash (neck) is 'unlikely' to return, with the club opting to take a cautious approach with his latest injury.
Matt Leray (concussion) and Jack Scrimshaw (knee) are both one-to-two weeks away from a return to play, mid-season draftee Max Beattie (ankle) will miss up to six weeks after suffering an injury during his first VFL game last weekend, and James Blanck (hamstring) is available to travel for Box Hill's trip to face the SUNS, also on Friday.
High Performance Manager Peter Burge provided updates on each player below, following the side's return to the club following their bye last week.
Tom Barrass - Hamstring (Available)
"He is training well. He's had a number of weeks of training now. He was training the week of the Bulldogs game, and it was just determined that he wasn't quite ready to play in that game. He certainly had some work under his belt, and we've been able to consolidate over the last fortnight. He's fully training and he's available this week."
James Blanck - Hamstring (Available)
"Blanck is going to be available to play this week. We returned from our bye last week and had a training session on the Friday, which he participated in. It was a skills session, and he joined the main group and trained again yesterday. We've got another main training session on Wednesday, which he'll participate in. He'll play some managed minutes on the weekend. We've had a bit of a stop-start progression in the year so far, and we'll go back to managing his minutes so we can set him up to play the following week, build his minutes and finish the year strongly."
Jack Gunston - Foot (Test)
"Jack Gunston's foot is progressing and improving. Post the St Kilda game, he didn't recover as well as we'd have liked from that game, hence he didn't play against the Bulldogs. He slowly moved back into some running late last week. We gave him just a decent break, and he was able to progress running last week. He did a running session on Saturday, just gone. He's trained with the main group yesterday. We'll see how he's pulled up from yesterday, and then the plan is for him to train tomorrow with the group again, fully train, and then we'll make a call."
Conor Nash - Neck (TBC)
"He's improved. He's probably less likely than likely for this week. He had a nerve issue that's related to his neck. He lost a little bit of power in his arm and some of his functional movements. He's certainly improved over the last couple of weeks. We've consulted with some specialists from other sports around this type of issue. So right now, he's still non-contact training. His strength has improved, he's improving, it's just sometimes these things take longer. We felt with the bye that we may get some steeper improvement. We haven't, it's been more gradual, so this week's looking unlikely, and we'll just keep reassessing, keep going through all his tests and keep conditioning him through non-contact skills and extra conditioning until the doctors give us the tick off. We've still got another day for our main training session. We'll make the final call tomorrow, but at this stage it's unlikely he'll play this week."
Matt Leray - Concussion (1-2 weeks)
"Yeah, really unfortunate. We had some drills yesterday that we did, and there was some contact involved, and unfortunately, he's copped a knock. Just given protocols and concussion, young player, first year in the system, he's in the concussion protocols now. We'll certainly miss this week's game, and he'll be an assess for next week. We'll just update as we go through the protocols."
Jack Scrimshaw - Knee (1-2 weeks)
"He certainly has progressed in the last fortnight, and he's doing more conditioning, more running, running faster and looks like he's got his bounce back. He certainly won't play this week, and we've flagged it potentially for next week, but it'll be most likely the week after that, so either Round 16 or Round 17. We just want to make sure we get a block of work in, consistently back-to-back, pulling up well, and then we'll consider what sort of minutes he returns on because it has been a little while now since he's played and as those weeks get longer, we need to make sure we've got enough work in the tank to prepare him and set him up for success for the rest of the season."
Max Beattie - Ankle (4-6 weeks)
"Unfortunately, he's copped a syndesmosis ankle injury, a moderate level sprain in his first game for Box Hill. He's now going to miss some time. We've listed him as four to six weeks. We're hoping it's on the shorter end of that. He's out of the boot now and walking in runners, which is positive, but he will be missing some footy for a few weeks. He'll go through our rehab stages and protocols, and we'll be able to pump heaps of education and learnings into Max, given he's just come into our system, so it's an opportunity for us as well to give him some preparation and all the things that go with being a young development player. Then he'll be back playing in, hopefully, four to six weeks, and he'll come back with new knowledge and knowing more about the Hawks."
