Box Hill Coach Sam Mitchell has taken a look over the AFL-listed Hawks who took to the field in the side's season opener against Casey on the weekend.

The Demons outfit proved too strong on the day, prevailing by 51 points over the Hawks.

Mitchell said the midfield battle was where the visitors were able to gain an advantage, leaving Box Hill bereft of scoring chances.

"Unfortunately we struggled to get any ascendancy through the midfield on the weekend," Mitchell said.

"Most of our attacking forays started from deep in our defence, which meant there were limited opportunities for our forwards on the day which was obviously reflected on the scoreboard.

"For this reason, it was obviously a difficult day for our forwards but also our backs who were under the pump all day as well."

The Hawks history at their greatest fortress of all

Here's Sam's review of each of the 10 Hawks:

Michael Hartley (20 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles)

"Harts struggled to get further up the ground this week with their three tall forwards causing us trouble. He was still a valuable contributor, but the weight of numbers of inside 50s overwhelmed our defence in the end. He was still able to use the ball well and create some drive but it was ultimately from too deep on the field."

Lachlan Bramble (18 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles)

"Bramble's game was really pleasing, it was another big step in the right direction. His run and flair with the ball was a stand-out."

Damon Greaves (11 disposals, 6 tackles)

"Greavesy played as a small defender on the weekend. He had some good moments with ball in hand, but the small forwards of the Demons caused us some trouble on the day hitting the scoreboard, particularly from our defensive 50 stoppages."

Jonathon Ceglar (9 disposals, 5 marks, 11 hit-outs)

"Ceglar played predominantly forward and struggled to have impact before hurting his ankle mid-way through the third term."

Connor Downie (9 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles)

"Downie is still learning the craft. He is working on his consistency between quarters and games. He has had a couple of good performances, but this week he found it hard to get involved in the game. His ability to run and drive his legs was pleasing but he unfortunately wasn't able to get as involved in the game as he would have liked."

Emerson Jeka (9 disposals, 6 marks, 1 tackle, 3 goals)

"Jeka found a way to make a contribution which is a really positive sign. Despite limited opportunities, his willingness to compete in the air and on the ground was a stand-out and he found a way to hit the scoreboard."

Keegan Brooksby (8 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal)

"He started forward and played some time in the ruck. But he was used as an inside mid through the second half due to some injuries. He showed some promise up the ground with his bigger body. He also took a couple of very nice contested marks."

Ned Reeves (8 disposals, 2 marks, 41 hit-outs)

"It was a big test for Reevesy against Majak Daw. He was able to comprehensively win the hit-outs and also had two shots on goal. But he couldn't convert his hit-outs into clearances this week, so we're looking for some more consistency with his ruck-midfielder connections."

Josh Morris (7 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles)

"From limited opportunities he was able to lay four really strong tackles, but he didn't get as involved as he would have liked."

Finn Maginness (6 disposals, 1 mark, 8 tackles)

"Finn did another really pleasing tagging job. He was able to keep his opponent to eight or nine possessions through the first three quarters before moving to defence in the last quarter to try and change things up. He has had a good month."

And some of the best Box Hill-listed guys?

"Jai Newcombe on debut was strong and physical and took his pre-season form into the year."

"Ed Phillips continued a strong run of form where he was able to link us up between the arcs whilst also showing some strong defensive efforts."

"Callum Porter prepared for the game as an inside mid but, with Jordan Cunico hurting his hamstring in the opening minute of the game, he was pushed into defence and he was strong in that new role."
