All four players on Hawthorn's AFL injury list are tracking well in their recoveries, according to High Performance Manager Peter Burge.
Burge provided updates on Matt LeRay, James Blanck, Mabior Chol and Will Day ahead of Hawthorn's blockbuster Thursday night match against Collingwood, and Friday night's milestone 500th Box Hill match at the Kennedy Community Centre.
Matt LeRay (concussion) - 1 week
“He’s tracking well. He has resumed full training with the group. He won’t play this week in the VFL. We’re going to give him a block of work over the next week, and given there’s a VFL bye after the game this week, it’ll give him two weeks of preparation into the VFL game after the bye. Off the back of an ankle injury recently as well, we just wanted to get some more continuity in his preparation.”
James Blanck (shoulder) - 2 weeks
“It’s very minor. He just had an innocuous incident at training, which was in our main session last week, which ruled him out of the game. We could get him back out there playing this week, but we’ve made a decision just to get some more training under his belt. With the VFL bye next week also, we just want to make sure he’s absolutely ready to go for his increased game time. We brought him back on reduced minutes (from his last injury). It just allowed us to get a little bit more preparation into him, given he’d had such a long-term injury recently, but he’ll be back after the VFL bye.”
Mabior Chol (hamstring) - 2-3 weeks
“He’s tracking really well. Today, he ran quite fast and is progressing. We’re looking at either Round 10 AFL or Round 11 AFL (return), but it’s tracking well at this stage. We’ll look to progress that over the next week, and once he’s close to top speed, he’ll resume football training with the main group, and then we’ll make a decision on which round he returns.”
Will Day (shoulder) - 3-4 weeks
“He’s progressing well. He’s doing more football training and just adding the minutes up with football training. We’re getting more specific with his contact, he’s resumed contact with the group. He’ll be resuming full training over the next week, and then we’re still looking at that Round 11 AFL, but returning in the VFL that week, I think it’s VFL Round 9 against Williamstown. That’s the plan which we’re shooting towards, but yeah, still some more work to do and more football sessions to put together.”
