Could Luke Breust defy the odds and become just the seventh Hawthorn player to win a Coleman Medal?

Stranger things have happened.

With five rounds to go in the season, Breust sits equal-third on the Coleman Medal tally, having booted 41 goals on the year to date.

Breust sits alongside Jack Riewoldt, Jesse Hogan and Tom Hawkins in third position, trailing former teammate Lance Franklin by one goal and North Melbourne sharpshooter Ben Brown by 11 majors.

But Breust’s recent form suggests that a fast finish is firmly in the realm of possibility.

Over the past three rounds, Breust has kicked a bag of five last week against Carlton and a bag of six against the Western Bulldogs a fortnight prior.

Only Hawkins, who nailed seven last week against Melbourne, has kicked more goals than Breust over the period.

To find proof of Coleman comebacks, you only have to look as far as last year to find a precedent for Breust.

Entering the final round of the home and away season, Josh Kennedy seemed a surety to win his third consecutive Coleman with 64 goals to his name.

While Joe Daniher (60 goals) and Lance Franklin (59) followed behind by a reasonable distance.

Daniher kicked two goals to finish off an impressive season that saw him awarded his maiden All Australian honour.

But, in the true showmanship that we have come to expect from him, Buddy turned one on.

Franklin kicked ten goals, to go along with 25 touches and 10 marks, to steal an unlikely victory and his fourth Coleman.

A look at the fixture on the run home for Breust feeds this optimism as well.

This Sunday, Breust takes on Fremantle, a side that the 27-year old has hit the scoreboard against in each of his 11 encounters at an average of 2.2 per game.

Breust then takes his talents to the MCG, a venue where he has kicked almost three times more goals at than any other ground in the country, when the Hawks clash with the Bombers.

Geelong and Sydney, who Hawthorn meet in Rounds 21 and 23 respectively, sit equal-second behind only Collingwood, as the most common victims to Breust’s scoring.

But the Round 22 match-up with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium poses as Breust’s most threatening game.

The Hawks forward has kicked 16 goals from his four outings at Etihad this year including a haul of six and two bags of five goals.

Breust has a way ahead of him to catch the Kangaroo.

But his recent burst of form has allowed the door to remain open ajar.
